Diet to become SlimDiet for fitness should be so planned that the following three aims are fulfilledThe weight should get reduced: For reducing weight, a person should take such diet which contains less number of calories than spent by him everyday. The amount of calories may be reduced gradually and safely. The body should get all the necessary ingredients in adequate quantities. The body should get everyday about 1gm of proteins per kg of the ideal weight. Some carbohydrates should also be included in the diet to supplement the proteins and prevent ketosis. Care should also be taken to maintain the adequate quantity of vitamins and minerals. If their deficiency develops, they can be administered parenterally. The diet should be such that the patient would take it happily and would not form aversion to it. Cultivating proper eating habits is equally important since the real aim of treatment is not only to reduce weight but also to maintain the reduction thereafter. Proteins: Diet should be so planned that the body gets about 50 to 60 grams of proteins everyday. This much quantity of proteins is necessary for maintaining the nitrogen balance in the body. As a part of some slimming programs, patients are given protein powders. It is hoped that protein would burn away the excess fat. The rate of weight-loss can be increased taking protein powder; but due to its side effects, it is advisable to start taking it only under medical supervision. Carbohydrates: It is an undisputable fact that those who wish to reduce their weight should drastically cut down carbohydrates from their diet. In a food containing 1000 calories, the proportion of carbohydrates should not exceed 100 grams. It is essential to stop sugar totally as it contains no nutritional value. It does not create any feeling of satiety and creates false hunger. Patients should decrease their carbohydrate intake gradually to avoid uneasiness, tension, perspiration, delirium and unconsciousness.Fats: In a diet containing 100 grams of carbohydrates and 50 to 60 grams of protein, the proportion of fat should not exceed 40 to 50 grams. Though small, this proportion of fat is adequate for the body.Vitamins: During the period of dieting, the food should contain plenty of raw vegetables and fruits. The body gets adequate quantity of vitamins and minerals from them. Vegetable contain low calories and yet they fill up the stomach and give the feeling of satiety. Moreover fibers contained in the vegetables and fruits prevent and remove constipation. Vitamin deficiency does not occur if a person continues to take adequate quantity of milk and sprouted wheat. Minerals: Among the various minerals, calcium and iron are more important. Milk supplies us with the necessary calcium and green leafy vegetables supply the iron.
